Lawn in Hisaya-odori Park and the lit TV tower at night

Visited: Thursday, August 14, 2025
Photos and descriptions reflect conditions that night.

I was in Osaka and Nagoya for the Expo — and to try a bike on public transit. From Osaka I moved on to Nagoya; I hadn’t shot much there, so I walked more here. Nagoya’s population is 2,337,864 (September 1, 2025). At 9:51 p.m. I came up from the subway.

Last time I’d walked from Sakae toward Nishiki. This night was central Sakae — new ground for me. Host-club billboards dominate the walls. Near Ikeda Park, Asian men and women sat on chairs set out on the street to cool off; it felt less like Nishiki, more like another city’s night. I passed a group that looked like they’d come from an underground-idol event, and clusters of middle-aged fans on oshi-katsu. Touts mixed in. A thick, mixed crowd.

Around the Station

Glowing floor panels with the TV tower beyond the trees

A plaza with a grid of lit floor panels. Young people stand talking; through the trees, the tower’s red-and-white frame. Bright underfoot — night without much shadow.

Blue Sakae Station Exit 4 sign on a wide sidewalk

栄駅 Sakae Sta. Exit 4 in blue. A wide walk under warm streetlight. Two women in light skirts walk toward the camera; windows glow in the towers behind. The street begins here.

Directory for Nagoya City Gallery Sakae and Naka Ward Office

Right: 名古屋市民ギャラリー栄 and 中区役所. Red banners on the trees; two women in black walk toward me. Even past city offices, the sidewalk keeps moving.

Daily Yamazaki beside large host-club billboards

Daily Yamazaki on the left. On the right, 職業、イケメン。 and AIR GROUP faces. Nagoya Tokyu Hotel further on. Convenience-store light and host portraits share one block.

Narrow neon street with stacked bar directories

Into a narrow street. Vertical directories stacked on the left; a wave mural on the right. A man in black walks toward the camera. Signs sit close — snack and club density.

Pub IBIZA ISLAND neon and people at the doorway

Pink Pub IBIZA ISLAND. Two people in red sit in the recessed entrance; 無料案内所 in yellow on the left. A bicycle basket in the foreground. Snack-bar street, not park promenade.

Hakata ramen board and a wall of host-club ads

九州博多 長浜ラーメン in yellow. A wall of host faces; 全ホストに告ぐ。 Someone on a phone at the curb; a taxi; a bike crossing. Ramen and host ads at the same corner.

Yaba-cho Station bike-parking sign and vending machines

A 矢場町駅 bike-parking board. Red vending machines and SAKURA 薬. Two figures walk away; traffic slides past. Closer to Yaba-cho than to the tower lawn.

Sakae Social Building signs filling a narrow street

栄ソシアルビル on the right — small lit shop names in a grid. Sachi on the left; a blue car ahead; WAVE above. The building name matches the wall: bars and night spots stacked floor by floor.

Hirokoji-dori sidewalk and summer festival notice

Wide Hirokoji-dori sidewalk. A board for 広小路夏まつり — traffic closed on the 23rd and 24th. Red Nagoya Grampus banners on the poles. Trees between walk and roadway; quieter than the neon alleys.

Hisaya-odori subway sign and Mitsukoshi in the distance

A blue 久屋大通 sign. Warm light in a glass café on the left; a crosswalk on the right. MITSUKOSHI further down. Three women walk toward the camera — back toward the department-store end of the strip.
