Photos and descriptions reflect conditions that night.

I was in Osaka and Nagoya for the Expo — and to try a bike on public transit. From Osaka I moved on to Nagoya; I hadn’t shot much there, so I walked more here. Population 2,337,864 (September 1, 2025). At 9:21 p.m. I came up at Osu Kannon Station.

The night before I’d started from Sakae. This night began at Osu Kannon Station. The temple sits nearby — through the grounds, into Osu Kannon-dori’s arcade, then on through Niomon-dori’s covered streets. Osu is a cluster of arcades, but there were more young people than I’d expected. The energy surprised me.

Around the Station

Station exit lights and FamilyMart on the sidewalk

The subway exit glows blue-white beside a FamilyMart. A car crosses the zebra. Different entrance from Sakae’s host-club neon — but walkers are already here.

Directional sign to Osu Kannon and pedestrians on the walk

A blue arrow: 大須観音. Under a red footbridge, a Santa Cruz shirt and a couple pass. Wide road before the shopping streets begin.

Gravel temple grounds and a red-pillared hall

Onto gravel. A red-pillared hall on the left; nobori ahead. Modern blocks behind the temple. Quiet. Someone with a stroller farther on. Out through the grounds into Osu Kannon-dori’s arcade, and the younger crowd keeps coming.

Akamon arch and AKAMON St. street sign

赤門 in red. WEGO and RushOut on the right; Sugi Pharmacy on the left. Someone with a green bag checks a phone. No cars — only shop light.

Osu Banshoji-dori arcade with shutters down

大須 万松寺通り. Ceiling ornaments still hang; yellow shutters and DENVER’s white door. Tiny figures far ahead. Footsteps carry under the roof.

Closed Taiwanese stall and lit Sugi Pharmacy

台湾名物屋台 shuttered on the left; okonomiyaki board and Sugi Pharmacy on the right. Red cones; lanterns above. Open and closed sit side by side.

Bansho-ji entrance with tanzaku, lanterns, vending machine

Into Bansho-ji. Wish strips overhead; lanterns deeper in. An orange vending machine. A board notes rites at the Fudo hall on the 28th. Temple air next to shopping neon.

TSUKUMO and GREEN banners along the arcade

TSUKUMO in green; GREEN banner with lemons. Twin-tails walk left; a yellow dress ahead. More shutters on the right — the electronics stretch still has people.

Red neon for Higashi Niomon-dori

東仁王門通り in red neon. Maneki-neko relief; a red A-frame. Two men walk deeper. Dimmer under the roof; shop light in patches.

Two women at a crosswalk before an arcade entrance

At the zebra, two women look left. Arcade mouth and lanterns beyond; a cyclist on the right. A pause before crossing.

Red arcade frame and closed shutters on Higashi Niomon-dori

Red trusses; a round 大須 sign. Shutters both sides; a white vending machine. Empty floor taking the red light.

Long shuttered arcade with lanterns and a gold ornament

Lanterns and a gold sphere. Shutters left and right. A pale vehicle at the far end. Daytime Osu is elsewhere — this is the long night version.

Garbage truck and Aoyagi uiro sign

A white refuse truck in the middle of the arcade. 大須仁王門通; 青柳ういろう on the right. Recycle-shop shutters down. Cleanup hour.

Niomon gate with lit Nio statues

Red pillars. Nio lit behind the screens. Nobori and stone steps beyond. No people — only the guardians holding the night.

Osu Kannon main hall lit red

The main hall in red floodlight. 観世音菩薩 banners on the stairs. Gravel and stone lead up. After the arcades, the temple’s red was still the clearest light.
