[Shinsekai / Shin-Imamiya] Walking the Night District — Tsutenkaku and the Dobutsuen-mae Arcade
Watch this walk

Photos and descriptions reflect conditions that night.
I was in Osaka and Nagoya for the Expo — and to try a bike on public transit. The hotel I booked for access and cost sat near JR Shin-Imamiya. Osaka City’s population is 2,778,917 (January 1, 2025). Shinsekai and Nishinari are close. At 8:33 p.m. I stepped out under the tracks.
Shinsekai has gone thoroughly tourist. Tsutenkaku, kushikatsu, shooting galleries — foreign visitors pack the lit streets. Toward Dobutsuen-mae, a long arcade feels different. Next to Tobita Shinchi, Nishinari’s air still hangs. Chinese-run karaoke izakayas line the walk; women who look like touts stand at the shops.
The camera overheated mid-walk, so some video is missing.
Around the Station

A blue station board and a height-limit sign, 3.8M, sit under the elevated line. On the zebra crossing, three people in light shirts walk toward the camera. A red-banded bus waits on the right; a small crowd stands under the tracks. The station front is already warm.

On the pedestrian street: 新世界遊技場 チャンピオン DX (Shinsekai Amusement Champion DX). Left, kushikatsu neon and blue wave lights. A bicycle; people at the doorway. Shinsekai starts here.

HOTEL WING INTERNATIONAL. Beyond it, yellow 横綱 (Yokozuna) and 射的. Star-pattern tiles; neon stacked ahead. Built for visitors.

Golden Billiken heads flank the shopfronts. A group of three walks toward me. Light hard enough that night barely leaves a shadow.

Under the roof: 串かつ おうじ; かすうどん and ホルモンうどん. No-vehicles board. Two figures walk away. Closer signs, narrower lane.

In an underpass, someone plays accordion against the tiles. People head for the bright exit. Quieter than the neon street above.

Into the long arcade toward Dobutsuen-mae. Green Karaoke Izakaya La La La on the left; れいれい on the right. A pink shirt walks ahead. More karaoke bars than kushikatsu boards. Women who look like touts stand at shopfronts.

Graffiti; bicycles. Less tourist front — closer to Nishinari’s night.

A man in black walks deeper in. Chinese shop names keep coming; hexagonal paving takes the light.

On a wider walk: ZAZA HOUSE / SHINSEKAI ZAZA banners. A MACHES food truck draws a line. Someone in black walks toward the camera.

Three men talk at the door. Another layer of night behind the kushikatsu front.

Tsutenkaku in blue light. Someone in pink takes a photo. 釣鐘まんじゅう on the left; a karaoke-izakaya chochin on the right.

Cyclists cross under the tower’s legs. Neon and taxis beyond. The walk ends under the steel.
