Photos and text reflect that night.

I’m looping back to Tokyo via several towns, with Osaka as a waypoint. The day before I was in Mie, but heavy rain scrubbed the shoot. First stop this round: in front of Tenri Station, Nara. Population 59,554 (2025 census). I stood at Kintetsu-Tenri.

Tenri is known as a religious city — home to Tenrikyo Headquarters. Station light spilled onto wet stone; a FamilyMart glowed beside the entrance. From the station a long covered arcade runs toward the church HQ — Tenri Hondori, Mishima Shotengai. Plenty of students, likely from Tenri University. The whole town feels distinct: faith and daily life sharing the same streets.

Around the Station

Kintetsu-Tenri Station entrance and FamilyMart

近鉄 天理駅 lettered bright. Wet plaza reflecting the canopy. FamilyMart to the right. I started here.

Wide station plaza with a small crowd at the doors

Vertical louvers on the station face; tactile paving across the foreground. One figure left; a small cluster at the lit entrance. Rain-dark tiles.

Mont-bell pavilion with a tiered conical roof

A white stepped roof; clothing racks behind glass — mont-bell. Folded umbrellas and young trees on the grass.

Ekimae Hondori / Main Street sign and SANKO lights

駅前本通り / Main Street on the left. Red signals; SANKO and cram-school boards. Chains and tactile paving on the walk.

Sakaemachi Shopping Center arcade interior

Yellow-and-brown floor stripes; an orange ceiling banner. 栄町ショッピングセンター left. Bikes, three people, a white van.

Tenri Hondori blue sign and no-entry marker

天理本通 overhead. Red signal wash on the tiles. Bike and cone left; no-entry right. Light deeper under the vault.

Tenri Mishima Shotengai washed in green signal light

天理三島商店街 above the span. Pedestrian green on the floor. Empty; white lights far ahead.

Curving shuttered arcade with a tactile strip

Tactile paving curves right. Shutters both sides. Only fluorescents hold the floor.

Lantern-lined approach toward a large hall

Lanterns left and right; a large building at the end of the road. Wet stone reflecting the lamps — Tenrikyo Headquarters side.

Tenrikyo Church Headquarters with a purple crest banner

Wide stone court; white bollards. Ahead is Tenrikyo Church Headquarters, a purple banner with crests across the timber front. One small figure at the entrance.

Nara Marathon flag and awa-okoshi shop signs

奈良マラソン 12.14 on a yellow flag. 天理名産 粟おこし and 上志商店 right. A long shuttered walk.

Red-and-white stall deep in the arcade

A red-and-white temporary stall right; red signal glow on the floor. Mostly shutters; brightness only farther on.

Wai Plaza sign and parked bicycles

わい・プラザ and Tenri Hondori arcade info left. Bikes in front; two people by the wall.

Karaoke and DAISO lights toward the arcade exit

Karaoke and DAISO signs right. Someone with a white bag walking left. Red signal at the far end — back toward the station side.
