Photos and text reflect that night.

Heading west toward Kansai — back to family in Kobe — I’m stopping in towns along the way, then looping home through places I still want to see. After Takefu I moved into the prefectural capital, Fukui City. Population 251,775 (2025 census). At 9:09 p.m. I stood on the west side of JR Fukui Station.

The Hokuriku Shinkansen reached Fukui on March 16, 2024 — Tokyo to Fukui in as little as 2 hours 51 minutes with no transfer. The concourse feels freshly finished, and redevelopment around the station looks more active than before. Around JR Fukui Station the whole frontage is dressed in dinosaur monuments, robots, and murals — the “Dinosaur City” / “Dinosaur Kingdom” pitch that draws visitors. Past the city tourist booth and Seiren Planet’s glass, the nearby arcade and side streets still hold atmosphere, but Wednesday night was quiet — few walkers. About ten minutes out is Katamachi. Same midweek lull: touts and taxis stood out more than crowds. I’d like to come back on a Friday.
