[Nara / Sanjo-dori] Walking the Night District — Kuragari-goe Nara Kaido and Kintetsu-Nara
Watch this walk

Photos and descriptions reflect conditions that night.
Heading west toward Kansai — back to family in Kobe — I came through Shizuoka, Aichi, and Mie into Nara City. Population 345,403 (as of September 1, 2025). At 10:34 p.m. I stood outside Kintetsu-Nara Station again after a long gap.
Deer make the news here often, but at night the tourist crowds thin and the entertainment streets go quiet. From Kintetsu-Nara I followed Sanjo-dori (三条通り) — part of the old Kuragari-goe Nara Kaido (暗越奈良街道) — into Konishi Sakura-dori, Umaimon Street, and Mochiidono Center-gai. On Sanjo-dori I nearly walked into a deer scavenging trash bags. Toward JR Nara Station, girls-bar touts were still working the sidewalk.
Around the Station

Gyoza no Ohsho on the left, Photo HIKARIE shutters on the right. Someone with a backpack walks deeper into the stones — just outside the station, still bright.

Red-and-white lanterns hang across the arch. A walker in light blue steps under them; shutters closed on the right.

A OnePark lightbox points to 奈良うまいもん街. Shibata Parking and a Jazz Spot board frame a narrow lane as one figure walks ahead.

A pole holds 采女まつり and しもみかど with shrine lanterns. Bikes on the left, stone wall on the right, a red light at the far end.

Orange おでん 三河屋 and 佐久良 on the right; shutters down on both sides. Few people this late.

A wooden board on brick reads 紺屋町七福神弁天社. Offertory box, vermilion torii, a yellow camera notice — a pocket shrine in the shopping grid.

Overhead: もちいどのセンター街. Hearing-aid shutters, a pedestrian-only sign. After closing time the arcade carries every footstep.

On Sanjo-dori a deer scavenges overflowing bags — Leonidas on the left, hanko shop on the right. I stopped short; it didn’t.

A banner names 小西さくら通り商店街 under red lanterns. APA Hotel on the right, Ryokan Hakuho on the left; a red signal farther on.

Wings and bunny ears wait beyond the tactile paving near JR Nara Station — girls-bar touts under a bus canopy and a 40 km/h sign.

A long white canopy crosses the plaza. Tile roofs on the right, building light on the left. Wide stones, few people.

Welcome to Nara! and Sanjo-dori hang from a lamp post. KICONA in red; tactile paving straight ahead. Almost empty.

Mos Burger shutters and trash bags on the right; McDonald’s vertical signs on the left. Someone in red boots walks toward the camera on the patterned floor.

Gyoki Bosatsu stands on a fountain-like base; 近鉄 奈良駅 lettering behind. Under the steel roof, the walk ends back at the station.
Quieter than weekend Omachi — shutters, a deer on Sanjo-dori, touts by JR Nara, then Gyoki under the Kintetsu lights.
