[Osaka / Kitashinchi] Walking the Night District — Osaka Station and Ohatsu Tenjin
Watch this walk

Photos and text reflect that night.
Heading west through Kansai to see family in Kobe, I checked on my father, visited the family grave, then stopped at JR Osaka Station. Osaka City’s population is 2,778,917 (as of January 1, 2025). At 10:27 p.m. I stood on the south side.
Whenever I’m here, I want to walk Kitashinchi and Sonezaki. With the Expo late on, foreign tourists were easy to spot — though Namba still felt busier. Near Sonezaki, girls-bar staff stood in lines; Kitashinchi had rows of signs and touts, giving it a more adult-nightlife feel. I walked from the taxi lanes under the tracks, through the Ohatsu Tenjin (Tsuyu-no-Tenjinsha) arcade, then along a temporary Umeda walkway back to the station lights.
Around the Station

Blue OSAKA STATION CITY and JR Osaka Station signs; taxis under the overhang, brake lights on the asphalt. I started here.

Two wait under heavy pillars; the zebra opens wide, car light streaks the far lane. Scale jumps right outside the station. This is where I step into Kitashinchi.

A Kitashinchi alley. Three walkers head in; yellow lanterns right, vending machine and delivery scooter left, タクシーのりば in the mix.

White flags read はじまる、御堂筋; Daikoku Drug ahead, blue fairy lights in the trees. A Kitashinchi-branch phone number still glows on the right — boulevard air again.

Kitashinchi’s main street — Sonezaki-Shinchi Hondori (曽根崎新地本通). A GRAND OPENING board on the stones; someone in a lit doorway, neon stacks farther on. Bikes lean left.

White heart balloons spell HAPPY B.D. REI above stand flowers; a ramen vertical hangs left.

Yellow Times Kitashinchi No. 4; a white convertible at the corner while two people look at their phones. Blue LEDs wrap the trees at the crossing.

Rent and sale posters fill the glass; a couple on the tactile strip toward an arcade mouth lined with blue LEDs.

Overhead: 露天神社(お初天神) and a sleeping cat. Checkered tiles, red lanterns right, shutters and bikes left.

Three by a bright blue Two Down machine; the expressway slab above, 海仙亀多 and other boards on the right.

Yellow ジャンボ酒場 / ジャンボ総本店; people at the window, a DiDi taxi right. Fast-drink brightness — and that slightly sketchy Sonezaki edge still underneath.

CoCo 情報屋 and 情報屋 無料 in hard yellow; Hotel Prince farther down, a dark minivan right.

On the left, a large sign reads 麺. Three people cross the zebra, while someone at the corner looks toward me. A yellow-green wall and a rubbish bin mark the bend in the alley.

Bikes along the left — one neon-yellow frame — sushi board and neon ahead. Four walk toward me; a salaryman heads the other way toward the brighter avenue.

ひとめぼれ neon and red lanterns left; 大衆酒場 レレレ on the right. Checkered floor, lanterns overhead.

Blue LEDs edge a construction walkway; Kansai dialect on the wall — あかん, ちゃう. A blue station sign ahead.

大阪駅 / OSAKA STATION beyond the zebra; Daimaru high right, cars in the midground. Back on the station light.
