[Furano Station / Night Walk] Heso District and Suzuran-dori

I started a loop around Hokkaido with an 18-hour ferry to Tomakomai. Furano was the last filming day; the next day was travel back to Tokyo.
I had come from Obihiro. Furano is famous for lavender fields, but I never saw them on this trip. By day the streets show tourists and plates from across Japan. After dark the numbers drop, and the town turns quiet.
For many older viewers, Furano is also the town of Kita no Kuni kara (北の国から). Its Heso entertainment district (へそ歓楽街) appeared often on screen and still keeps some of that look. I walked from JR Furano Station, then into the narrow alley that is Heso, and on to Suzuran-dori (すずらん通り), at 7:41 p.m. while the sky was still blue.
The station wall carries large characters, 富良野駅. Blue lights run along the eaves. A standing board reads ふらの and FURANO. Almost no one is on the sidewalk.
Around the Station
Around the side, wood cladding holds the sunset in its windows. Blue lights continue under a covered walk. Streetlamps come on. Cars pass; walkers do not.
The signal is red. A second-floor board reads Midoriya fishing-tackle shop (みどりや釣具店). Under the canopy, tobacco (たばこ) and local sake (地酒) are lit. Across the road, Tsuruha Drug (ツルハドラッグ) is the brightest block, with a small group at the door. A mountain ridge still shows against the sky.
The sidewalk turns to brick. Ramen banners stand at a shopfront; warm light falls on the paving. A white van and parked cars sit in the lane. Farther on, a board reads しんきん. Shop lights are on; gaps between people are wide.
On a corner, a small hut of logs holds a green payphone, lit from inside. A yellow guardrail and tactile paving sit in front. Quiet here.
A narrow alley — this is Heso. Two gas cylinders stand by the wall. A white board advertises New Lavender (パブ・スナック ニューラベンダー), with pink signs farther down. A man in a white shirt stands in the lane; a taxi’s headlights fill it. Unlike the wide road by the station, the bar density is here.
Under red lights, three people talk. One raises a hand from inside the glass door; two stand on the sidewalk. A window poster reads DISCPARTY, with summer 2025 dates. Past them: lamps and parked cars.
Suzuran-dori announces itself with an arch. The characters are readable, but the road underneath is dark. No one is visible down the street.
Inside the arch, shutters are down on both sides. A single streetlight whitens the asphalt. A vending machine remains; nobody is walking. One red light sits at the far end.
Back at the crossing, people gather. Someone in white leans on a utility pole; others stand talking. From this side the すずらん通り letters glow red. The street stays quiet — a lit doorway next to a dark block.
