[Obihiro / Kita no Yatai] Walking the Night District — Station Dining Streets and Bar Alleys

I started a loop around Hokkaido with an 18-hour ferry ride to Tomakomai. From there the circuit around the island began. After traveling through eastern Hokkaido, I moved from Kushiro to Obihiro, the main city of the Tokachi region. Agriculture is the core industry — unusual for a city of this size. Specialty (full-time) farm households are said to make up around 80% of local farms, far above the national average.
A dining district spreads right outside the station. Being Friday, the streets feel lively, and touts stand at many corners. I walked from Kita no Yatai (北の屋台) near the station into Nakasu-dori and Meimon-dori.
The station front reads JR 帯広駅 and OBIHIRO STATION in lit lettering. The paved plaza is wide; a few people sit under trees. Outside the entrance it is dim, but the doorway itself holds bright light.
Around the Station
On the sidewalk, a teal board for Emerald (エメラルド) stands over a doorway. A group of four walks past; someone waits at the entrance. Headlights sweep the curb, and a colorful LED panel glows on the right.
Under a white Royal Plaza sign, a lit directory board shows many small tenants — the usual multi-floor bar building. Women in short dresses talk with a masked man on the bricks; girl-bar style calling is visible almost at the station. Down the street, the vertical Ishikawa-ya Building sign (石川屋ビル) and parked vans appear.
A crest board marks Nakasu-dori (中洲通り). Young men walk the stone center toward the camera. On the right, a Tosaka (とさか) nobori and motsunabe (もつ鍋) signs light a yellow façade; on the left, chochin lanterns hang above a white van. Friday night keeps the food lights on.
A vertical Kajino Building shopping-street (かじのビル名店街) board stands on the left. Across the lane, Hageten (はげ天) and Yamachan (やまちゃん) glow orange and white; the bright alley to their right is the entrance to Kita no Yatai (北の屋台). A blue bicycle rests in front. The shop lights are warm, but the street as a whole is not crowded.
A tall white board reads Warayaki Robata no Kokoro (わら焼 炉端の心). Yellow price banners hang at the entrance; two people check phones on the sidewalk. A white car passes; a blue vertical neon climbs a distant building.
Inside a covered arcade, ceiling lights are bright and people are gone. White columns run to a vanishing point; bicycles line the right. Shutters are down — a cooler temperature than the bar streets a block away.
A Meimon-dori (名門通り) banner hangs over brick paving. Three men walk toward the camera. Vending machines sit left; a tall white board lists snack names like Miri, Mimosa, and Kikuyo (喜久代). Orange streetlight falls on the bricks; more signs continue into the distance.
A black vertical board advertises a cabaret club (キャバクラ) with a large character. Nobori banners line the sidewalk; a warm lamp lights the bricks. Parked cars and a blue-lit entrance sit farther on — another stretch of the same nightlife belt.
Back by Royal Plaza, a man in a white shirt stands near the door; others talk on the sidewalk. A TAXI / タクシーのりば pole and a white cab wait on the right. Hotel Dormy Inn’s sign appears against the sky — hotels and bars share the same short walk from the station.
A white Monsoon board advertises food, drink, and karaoke on the second floor. One person in a white shirt walks away down the pavement; cars sit in a parking strip on the right. Even on Friday, some blocks open up. Obihiro’s night leaves the impression of bright stall lanes alternating with these quieter stretches.
