Photos and text reflect that night.

Heading west toward Kansai — back to family in Kobe — I’m stopping in towns along the way, then looping home through places I still want to see. From Maizuru in northern Kyoto Prefecture I turned east into Fukui: Echizen City. Population 79,209 (2025 census). The old name Takefu still feels more familiar; the station keeps it even though the city is Echizen now. It’s also known as a place where Murasaki Shikibu spent part of her girlhood. At 8:20 p.m. I stood in front of Takefu Station.

Near the station sits a newly built city hall, and the blocks around it look freshly kept. Hotel Crown Hills Takefu lettered the night. A short walk out, covered sidewalks run past shopping streets — almost no foot traffic, dim enough to feel a little lonely. Red pillars and a lit Uotami held what density was left on the station side.

Around the Station

Takefu Station building and taxis in the rotunda

A low canopy and bright glass; two white taxis in the painted bay. Hotel Crown Hills Takefu glows to the right. I started here — Hapi-Line Fukui’s Takefu Station.

Yellow tactile strip toward steps where three people sit

Tactile paving curves to the doors. Three people on the left steps, a bike, one taxi right. A cram-school sign lit on a building behind.

Pedestrian crossing a scramble under a walk-signal glow

Signs for a pedestrian–vehicle split and scramble crossing. Green light on the stripes; someone in white crossing. A line of streetlamps runs straight ahead.

Four people turning a corner under a yellow awning

しみず on the shutter; a yellow awning; four figures rounding the corner. Green and red signals hang in the dark beyond.

Bright corner shop supported by glossy red pillars

A white canopy on red round columns; warm light through the glass. The zebra leads straight into that patch of night.

Wavy brick sidewalk under arcade lights and closed shutters

Wavy pavers under fluorescent strips. Shutters right, dark roadway left. Only the arcade lights hold the walk.

Kanzaki-ya oval sign and Takefu Notary Office plaque

神崎屋 on an oval; 武生公証役場 below; a tall Suntory Old panel in red. One thin doorway light beside the shutter.

Pink nobori at a covered shopping-street crossing

A pink nobori by the pillar; cool light under the canopy; a green signal past the far zebra. Empty otherwise.

Hanko shop shutter and a no-entry sign at the corner

はんこ across the shutter; no-entry with a daytime car ban below. Planters at the column bases.

Yellow-banded building and Magokoro sign at an intersection

Yellow band left; まごころ right. Two silhouettes on the crossing. The road thins into a string of distant lights.

Shiyakusho-mae bus stop poles along a tactile-paved walk

市役所前 on the round bus signs; tactile strip, streetlamps, autumn trees. A cone by the poles; pale light from the new city-hall side ahead.

Uotami Takefu Station-front branch at a red signal

魚民 and カラオケ on the corner; posters for 武生駅前店. A red signal paints the zebra. Back to station-front food light.
