Photos and text reflect that night.

Still circling Kansai on the way back to family in Kobe, I moved from Higashi-Maizuru to the next stop, JR Nishi-Maizuru. On the Maizuru Line the two stations look about even in ridership. Maizuru City’s population is 73,046 (2025 census). Higashi-Maizuru grew as a naval port; Nishi-Maizuru as a castle town. At 8:16 p.m. I stood at the entrance.

Right by the station is a solid arcade more than 500 meters long — Fureai-gai Sun Mall Manai. It was a Monday, so foot traffic was light, but the street still held the feel of busier days. Past Hotel Route Inn’s blue neon I walked under the colored pillars, through Chuo Shotengai and Hiranoya Street, then back to the west exit.

Around the Station

Glass front of JR Nishi-Maizuru Station at night

西舞鶴駅 between the blue JR and red Tantetsu logos. A yellow tactile strip curves to the doors. I started here.

Brick sidewalk toward a HOTEL ROUTE INN neon sign

A white pillar urges early tax filing; HOTEL ROUTE INN’s blue neon sits ahead. Station-front hotel light on the bricks.

Fureai-gai Sun Mall Manai arch over a stone street

The arch reads ふれあい街 サンモールマナイ. A white car in a lit garage left; Kawasaki Internal Medicine parking right. Taillights fade under the span.

Yellow-green arcade pillar and two cyclists ahead

A lit yellow-green pillar; two bikes ride deeper in. A white car in a garage bay, orange and blue pillars farther on.

Purple and yellow pillars over tiled arcade floor

Beige and green tiles; a purple pillar, then yellow. Mostly shutters — a quiet night arcade.

Tobacco neon and cyclists coming down the brick street

たばこ in red neon on the left; blue globe lamps; a white-helmet cyclist coming toward me. Shutters on both sides.

Chuo Shotengai banner and とまれ painted on the bricks

お買い物は 中央商店街 spans the street; とまれ on the pavement. Warm light in a shop left, dark shutters right.

Ryokan Shibamata behind a Chuo Shotengai arch

旅館 柴又 at the T-junction; 中央商店街 on the blue arch. A phone booth glows at the corner.

Teardrop lights hanging across a quiet shopping street

Teardrop lamps and round lanterns overhead; イケベ on the right, yellow barriers left. One red signal far ahead.

HIRANOYA STREET arch with yellow pillars

Yellow pillars and a light-blue crown: HIRANOYA STREET. Pink nobori, empty brick ahead.

Nihongai real-estate shop and Maizuru Grand Hotel at a crossing

不動産 ニホンガイ across the zebra; 舞鶴グランドホテル lettered high ahead. A green walk signal holds.

Nishi-Maizuru Station west-exit construction sign and cones

西舞鶴駅西口 on a works board; glowing cones, tactile strip toward the lit station. Back on the west side.

Repatriation Day sign and a pine behind a fence

A pine behind the fence; a green board reads 10月7日は舞鶴引揚の日. Another sign mentions the Unzen Maru and seeing off repatriation trains. The repatriation story from Higashi-Maizuru continues here by the station too.
