[Kyoto / Gion] Walking the Night District — Pontocho and Hanamikoji
Watch this walk

Photos and text reflect that night.
On the way west to family in Kobe, I had come north from Nara the day before and entered Kyoto City — population 1,430,062 (2025 census). I hesitated between Kawaramachi and Kyoto Station, then chose Keihan Gion-Shijo and stood at the entrance at 10:34 p.m.
I walked Pontocho and the Takase-gawa side, then Shijo-dori out toward Yasaka Shrine. Foreign tourists filled the streets; the touts looked almost idle. Under the lanterns I passed what looked like geiko or maiko in lavender kimono, and kept following what the night showed.
Around the Station

Blue Keihan Gion-Shijo Station sign; stairs drop beyond the stones. I started from the Shijo-dori side entrance.

Out of the station and onto Shijo Bridge — taxis and a bus on the roadway, walkers on the tactile paving, a Western-style building fixing the view across the river.

Pontocho board, ぽんと plaque, zig-zag stones; three walkers approach. At night the alley’s width becomes the whole mood.

Orange light behind wooden slats; someone sits left, more figures deeper in. Without cars, footsteps feel close.

Giboshi finials on Sanjo Bridge; one walker, taillights behind. I stretched the loop north across the Kamo-gawa on another span.

Kawaramachi side: maid-café tout and a BAR KUMA DEUS chalkboard. One step off the tourist bridges and the tout density rises.

Officer with a red wand, patrol car, someone turning under a tree — the nightlife strip’s usual security mix.

Foreign visitors on the ledge; others stand by a map board, talking in a circle under shop lights.

Rokkaku-dori under the arcade; ROUND1’s yellow wall and a taxi across the street where the covered walk meets the avenue.

Matsumoto Kiyoshi shutters; Minami-za’s roof ahead. Tourist signs and everyday shutters share the Gion-Shijo crossing.

Bridge view east: Minami-za, the Gion-Shijo entrance, Uber taillights cutting red across the deck.

Noren and lanterns; someone sits on the sidewalk guard fence. Under the eaves after closing time, people still linger.

Yasaka Shrine’s vermilion west gate beyond the crosswalk; 弥栄 yakiniku sign on the left. At Shijo-dori’s east end the shrine light pulls the eye.

Hanamikoji sign; inuyarai on an ochaya facade, crosswalk, red light — the north–south spine of Gion.

Minami-za lanterns and 市川團十郎 board; bus stop; four people walk on as I loop back toward the station.
