[Ina / Torimachi] Walking the Night District — Inashi Station and a Showa Arcade
Watch this walk

Visited: Tuesday, September 2, 2025
Photos and descriptions reflect conditions that night.
Looking for cooler air not too far from Tokyo, I headed for Nagano — north through Shizuoka, then Yamanashi into Shiojiri, then south to Ina. Population 64,901 (as of January 1, 2025). The altitude helps a little by day; the air is dry, and nights drop cool enough to walk easily. At 8:21 p.m. I stood outside JR Inashi Station on the Iida Line.
The station is low and bright. One taxi; a statue and green triangular markers to the right. Out front, a covered shopping arcade runs along the sidewalk, and the い〜なちゃんカード board catches the eye. For a city this size the bar strip felt surprisingly thick — machinery plants cluster around here, which starts to explain it. Even on a Tuesday there were headlights, but few people on the sidewalk — shutters and neon taking turns.
Around the Station

Green-framed 伊那市駅. Vending machines under a white awning; a green-and-white taxi on the left. Statue and phone booth on the right. White parking lines pick up the station light.

Tiled wall and a warm lamp on the left. Green-and-white roof overhead; small sakura plaques. A pole in the road; green signals ahead. Two, three sets of headlights.

Purple sign on the left wall; a small lightbox below; blue Asahi plate. A street lamp farther on. Neon holds almost all the color.

Checkered tile walk; tactile paving straight ahead. Overhead: 酒樽, 大いか; red たっぴ below. Mailbox and a silver kei car. Quiet under the roof.

Fluorescent tubes on the ceiling. 寿司 ◆ 錦三助. Farther: 昭和レトロ 時間旅行. Cardboard cage on the left; Asahi stand on the right. A white car at the far end. One figure walking away.

Stone paving deep ahead. Cones and parking on the left; red vending machine and シリウス A on the right. Pink TAMBAYAN. Wires cut the sky.

カラオケ and 楽っ子 in red on the right. Purple plants on the left. Taillights ahead. Red on the paving.

Blue-and-white awning, shutters down. Red 〒 for the post office on the left. Only the zebra stripes stay bright. Late Tuesday — shop light thins out.

Black vertical board: 伊那名菓処 越後屋. Speed limit 40 on the right. White light toward the station under the arcade. End of the walk — back toward the station glow.
Inashi Station sits on the Iida Line between the South and Central Alps. By day I’d walked this town in snow before; at night the same streets feel thinner — arcade shops, karaoke red, a Showa-labeled lane, then back toward the low station light.
