Latticed street with an orange lantern under the eaves

Photos and descriptions reflect conditions that evening.

Looking for cooler air not too far from Tokyo, I headed for Nagano — north through Shizuoka, then Yamanashi. After Fuji the night before I kept going north into Shiojiri. Population 65,437 (as of September 1, 2025). At 6:19 p.m. I got off at JR Narai Station on the Chuo Main Line, gateway to Narai-juku on the old Nakasendo — a post town I’d wanted to walk for a while.

The station is wood-framed, with the mountain green right behind it. Few people, even on a Sunday at dusk. In the juku, lattice fronts and a few lanterns were still on. By day the street fills with visitors; at night it goes quiet enough that the ratchet of my bike and water in the gutters carry down the road.

Around Narai-juku

Wooden Narai Station building and a lantern by the door

A black board reads 奈良井駅. White walls, dark timber, latticed windows. Warm light on the benches; a wooden lantern by the door. Someone in a blue shirt faces the entrance, phone up.

Stone retaining wall, steps, and mountains beyond a parking lot

White SUV, pale blue hatchback; a person in white crosses the gravel. Ishigaki wall, wooden houses above, a stone stair with a rail. Tall evergreen, then the dark ridge. Wide open ground after the train.

Lacquerware shop sign and a latticed street toward the mountain

Pillar board: うるしと民芸品の店 ゆぞうや. Lattices on both sides; orange light under the eaves. Small figures ahead, mountain closing the view — the classic long, narrow post-town street.

Someone on a bench and a quiet bend in the street

Someone in dark clothes sits on a low edge. Two-story timber continues; another walker farther on. Sky still blue, ridge thin. Shop lights only in spots.

A lone walker and the mountain at the end of the street

A light-clad walker down the middle. Bench left; vending-machine glow right. Deep eaves, lattice shadow, no cars. The mountain fills the far end.

Kagi-no-te parking sign and a bright lantern

Gravel bends right. White board: P かぎの手 駐車場. One orange lantern washes a timber front. The Nakasendo crank — so you couldn’t see straight through — sits here.

Stone lantern on a raised platform and warm light ahead

Blocks and a stone tōrō on the right; dark lattice on the left. Asphalt climbs and curves; only a warm eave light ahead. Night has settled in.

Small wooden roadside shelter and the mountain silhouette

Tiny timber roof; one bulb over white flowers. More orange points down the road. Mountain outline still against the sky.

Lit lattice window and faint figures ahead

Light through a lattice on the right; a small pine on the left. Deep indigo sky. Blurry walkers ahead. More than half the street is shadow.

Lantern under the eaves and the mountain at the vanishing point

A lantern high left paints the wall. Houses almost silhouette. Only the sky stays blue; the street dies into the ridge.

Kimono shop noren and a long shadow on the road

Black noren: きもの処 ひろ. One lamp throws a long shadow; soft light behind shoji. The juku night keeps going on those thin lights alone.

Sold as a daytime heritage stroll, at dusk it felt more like a late arrival — wood, mountain air, little still open. From half past six the blue hour was enough.
