【Matsumoto Station / Night Walk】(Matsumoto, Nagano) A Busy Station Front Before Golden Week

Visited: April 27, 2024 (Saturday)
April was a filming stretch from Kansai up into Hokuriku. After Himi Station, Nanao Station, and Shinano-Omachi Station, I was heading back toward Tokyo. Matsumoto sits on that return route.
The city is known as a gateway to Matsumoto Castle and Kamikochi. This walk stayed around the station. JR Matsumoto Station is on the Shinonoi Line, the Oito Line, and the Alpico Kotsu Kamikochi Line. Oshiroguchi is the East Exit, facing the castle. From Tokyo, Limited Express Azusa on the Chuo Line runs through; from Nagoya, Limited Express Shinano does the same.
It was the Saturday before Golden Week. Return traffic and sightseeing overlapped, and the streets around the station felt busy. Tour groups were easy to spot.
Around the Station

Outside Oshiroguchi the plaza is wide and paved in stone. The ground is wet and picks up the streetlamps. Arched openings run along the left; a green SUNPRO sign sits further back on the right.

One street off the plaza, restaurant signs take over. A noren for Uya (卯屋) — local sake and mountain food — hangs over the sidewalk. Round white lamps and overhead wires sit against a deep blue sky.

Sake barrels sit in front of a white-walled shop, beside a Shinshu soba sign. Further along is the blue sign of Nihonkai Shoya, an izakaya chain. Local shopfronts and national chains share the same street.

A few minutes on foot from the station is Tatsumitei (タツミ亭), a Western-style restaurant with TATSUMITEI on the sign. Charcoal-grill shops and karaoke signs continue along a pedestrian street.

Across the intersection is Shinmai MEDIA GARDEN, next to Hachijuni Bank. The light is red. Tactile paving leads over the crossing. Away from the restaurant streets, the lighting changes.

Teal PARCO neon sits on the corner. White streetlamps line the sidewalk; planting is on the left. The crowd thins a little here. Matsumoto PARCO was still open on this visit. After about forty years it closed on February 28, 2025. The building reopened on June 30, 2026 as Matsumoto Scena (松本シェーナ).

All-you-can-eat banners hang outside Gyukaku. The people standing there do not look like a restaurant queue. They appear to be gathering in front of Toyoko Inn. A Go Go Curry sign is visible further down. Chains make up a large share of the restaurants by the station.

Back toward the station, signs for Alpico Plaza and Matsumoto Bus Terminal appear. Saizeriya and Gyoza no Ohsho are stacked on a vertical board. People cross at the lights.

Along the covered walkway by the station are a kushi-katsu shop and a noren for Katsumon. Car lights show at the far end. The loop ran from Oshiroguchi through the restaurant streets, PARCO, and the bus terminal, then back to the station.
